Sister Surprise

The saying is true...'time flies when you're having fun'.

2 years at MMB have certainly flown by and during my time here I have been lucky to be able to teach a loyal bunch of kids and then their younger brothers and sisters!

Kristen (R) is currently attending my FSII and older sister Kirsten once attended my FSII also!

Kirsten gave me a welcome surprise today by popping back to say 'hi'! I think she was as pleased as I was about her visit. Look at the grin on her face!

You can't push Kyle around!

This is Kyle, from my Fri FS1 class (3:15pm). Don't be fooled by his sweet and innocent look...he's a strong kid who loves nothing more than to push the animals around!

Father's Day Concert

After months of preparation, the MMB Father's Day Concert finally took place yesterday and it was clear to see that everyone who participated put in a lot of hard work.

Everyone in the hall was a proud parent, auntie, uncle, grandparent and teacher. It was clear to see that everyone enjoyed themselves with the big beaming smiles across their faces. For many of the kids, it was the first time on stage but you would never have been able to tell as the kids entered the stage and performed their show with confidence.

Everyone is eager to see videos and photos from the day. These will be available to all at MMB shortly.

Thank you once again for everyone's contributions. The concert could not have happened with your help.

The last MP...

My eventful and entertaining Tuesdays came to an end yesterday as my character-packed MusikPiano class had their last class and final performance :o( The last class wasn't all fun and games, but actually full of hard work as I prepared for them a 'monster' test (in the words of Alec and Connor!). Their incentive to do well came in the form of stamps!

1. Studying for the 'monster' test 2. Chloe's team prepares her for the test.

The test wasn't easy, especially as they had to do it all with absolutely NO HELP! They tried their best (and that's why they ended up with stamps all over their arms, legs and tummy!) but of course they still asked for answers whenever they were stuck :oP

Connor -asking Auntie for the answers!

I promised the kids that for their final performance, I'd let them play on the BIG teacher's keyboard as a treat. It definately worked a treat as each of them played two solo pieces (as I requested) and each of them did it with no guidance! They came well prepared and it was good to see that some of them actually practiced at home (not mentioning any names!) Chloe glammed up for her performance, wearing a lovely summer dress with matching jewelry. Her outfit didn't go unnoticed as Alec said "why is Chloe wearing clothes that show her armpits!" :oD

Connor, Hin Hin. Alec and Chloe

The kids in the class have been with me for approx.9 months and they've given me so many laughs along the way. In the first class, they showed me that they could roar like a fierce lion whilst I prepped their little hands to form the correct hand posture, and very recently they tried to talk like an italian whilst trying to pronounce pianossimo and fortissimo!

I will miss this class so much - but the kids have to grow up sometime. It's been great that they did part of their growing up with me.

We finished with a group hug - I'll miss you guys!

MT Graduation Day!

My MusikTunes class came to the end of their first module today and we enjoyed the last class by reviewing our most favourite pieces from the last 10 weeks. The kids surprised me with their excellent memory by demonstrating the right actions/singing the right part at the right time! This was especially apparent whilst we were reviewing 'The Sugarplum Fairy' as the kids remembered the tiptoe section, and the fairy sections.

All the kids in the class have made great progress, and below, I have written a short message for each of them:

Yu-Yu: I will be sad to see you leave my class for another time slot :o( but I am sure we will bump into each other during the day :o) I've been very pleased to see you participate more in class, and your enthusiasm shines through when we sing London Bridge and Peekaboo together. Keep up the good work for Miss. Wong! I will be checking to see how you are doing.

Pui Lam: You have come a long way, from the student who can't stop playing with your MT book to the boy who actively participates and thoroughly enjoys every song we sing! You grasp the activities very quickly, always giving your full attention to make sure you haven't missed anything. I love when you sing our favourite song and the Wheels on the Bus, and when you arrive early, you always sing the Welcome Song for me (whilst pretend-playing the piano!)

Rachel: I've been teaching you for so long, and noticed a massive change when you joined MT. In class, you are not timid and show alot of enthusiasm. It's been great to see big beaming smiles on you face when we've been focusing on our music appreciation. You fell in love with The Sugarplum Fairy 'cause you listened to it so much at home and bounced backwards and forwards against Daddy's chest during People with Long Ears! Musically you've made alot of progress, keep it up!

Joshua: Like many of the other kids, your absolute favourite song is Catch a Fallin' Star, but you went one step further by being able to play the tune on the piano! Im really impressed, and happy about this as it means that you can carry on singing the song even once we move onto the next book. You've shown me that you have a good sense of rhythm, by being able to play the two fast beats for Somebody's Knocking at the correct time.

Nicole: You've been with me since FS1 and you've grown into such a funny little girl! I loved seeing you bounce up and down on your seat during Frog and Snake and putting the tambourine on your head during The Wheels on the Bus (though you are supposed to be driving it!). Musically, you are doing very well, as I have seen you improve during Somebody's Knocking. You're such a friendly girl, never hesitant to take another friend's hand (like in London Bridge), and I am happy to have you in my class!

Aidan: You have a lot of enthusiam in class and it shows through especially when you try to accompany me on stage whilst I am playing the piano. Over the course, you have showed great improvement with your sense of rhythm as you can now tap the right beats for Somebody's Knocking. You are the youngest in the class, and your progress is on par with you elder classmates. I am proud of you!

Kristy: You have an innate love for music, I can see this when you sing as much of the time you put alot of emotion and power into it. You also like to do hand gestures to show how expressive you are. I have been impressed to see you grasp the rhythm of Somebody's Knocking and try to mimic the strings from People with Long Ears with your voice!

Ethan: You started MT with Teacher evelyn, and after I showed her a video of my class she said that you seemed like a diferent boy! You have opened up over the course of 20 weeks and now participate much more in class. Like the others, you favourite song is Catch a Fallin' Star but you never fail to join in with the other songs. I've also seen you enjoy Frog and Snake and Wheels on the Bus.

Yan Yan: You showed enthusiasm from day one and I am happy to see you enjoy the class so much. I think your absolute favourite song must be Catch and Fallin' Star - I saw from the first day you were here by how intensely you follwed my actions and tried to sing along! The rhythm activities are picked up very easily by you, as I see you don't struggle much with creating a steady beat and when singing Somebody's Knocking.

Open Day SUCCESS!

The much anticipated MMB Open Day was yesterday and the turnout was truly amazing! We already had an idea as to how many kids and parents were going to turn up as we had RSVPs but the crowd that arrived were so friendly and so much fun!

Being based in the main studio, the kids who were with me were mainly under 2 years old - the sweetest age! I introduced MusikFootstep and MusikTunes and we had fun having instrument play, singing songs and music appreciation. All the activities were very well received and though I was going RED in the face (no exaggeration!) from being super tired, I was able to run of pure adrenalin! Seeing everyone's smiles and the kids following and dancing was all worth it. It was so lovely to see new faces, and also some existing students. It's always nice to see how much they've grown, and it's even nicer when I find out they haven't forgotten me!

I'd like to thank Teacher Wendy for assisting me and putting up with me in the main studio! THANK YOU!

The whole team was extremely busy yesterday, and though I had alot of fun with my kids yesterday I would have liked to see the other teachers have fun with the kids in their room. Teacher Ada was in charge of Kids on Air, Teacher Evelyn was in charge of MusikHarmony and Miss Wong was in charge of First Touch Piano and MusikPiano.

Luckily, we were all able to come together towards the end of the Open Day and perform a piano ensemble for our guests. They sure did enjoy it, as the kids were dancing whilst we were playing our pieces!

Giving the Gift of Music!

The new and innovative MusikPiano program has been well received since its launched in Oct 2008. Being able to see all our 3.5 years-old perform their first repertoire piece (Hot Cross Buns) in front of the class was very rewarding. And of course, parents and students were very happy with the result too. Rhythm Dance is the section where I witnessed the absolute joy that music can bring to the family. I still remember some students were experiencing difficulty in doing the "step-touch" action at the very beginning. After weeks of practicing, not only everyone (including parents) can do the action along with the rhythm of the music, students also pay close attention to the trumpet part in the B section! That was truly amazing to see.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff and teachers at My Musikbox for putting this new piano program together, and parents and students for their hrad work for making this cirriculum a wonderful experience for all of us!

The friendliest lions you will ever meet!

My KOA children were not in the best of health today, but they really are a considerate bunch as they all wore their face masks for a whole lesson. However, you'd never have guessed they were a little under the weather, as they were just as energetic as usual. They never fail to turn it into a fitness lesson for me!

Today's theme was on 'The Zoo', which they seemed to know a fair bit about already. We spent our time pretending to be the animals we talked about, and believe me...they can be really fierce when they want to be! They were really convincing as lions, elephants and snakes!

We used the bouncy animals as the other zoo animals whilst the kids all chose to pretend to be lions. When it came to caging up the animals, I explained to the children that lions can't be caged up with elephants and zebras 'cause the lions will eat them. They said to me "Teacher Shirley, we will not eat the zebras and elephants. We will be friends, ok?"

They may look wild

But they're a bunch of softies really!

First MusikTunes Certificate

Saturday February 21 was a very special day for myselft and all first group of MusikTunes students. We have completed the first level of MusikTunes (book 1&2) and certificates were awarded to all students. We went through everyone's favourite song and had a great time celebrating!
As a teacher of this group of two-year-olds, I am very proud of them at their achievement over the past 20 weeks! Many of them can now follow a steady beat, enjoy singing, and the best part is seeing them loving the classical pieces we do with Music Appreciation. Nuturing the youngsters and giving them something that they can enjoy for a lifetime is why I love to teach music.
We will be starting book 3 this coming Saturday and they will begin to have "homework", which is coloring the picture of the piece we learn in class. And of course when we get to book 4, we will see them learning the basic geography of keyboard. I just can't wait!!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day

to all our students and parents!
It's been a lovely day at MMB. Footstep 1 and Kids on Air children enjoyed a Valentine's day theme, where they sang songs and recited poems about love. When I asked the children from Kids on Air who they loved, they were quick to say Mummy, Daddy, brothers and sisters! What a sweet bunch!
Valentine's day wasn't just special for the kids today. A few Mums arrived at the centre with bouquets of flowers from the Dads, and the My MusikBox girls also have their admirers! Miss Wong and Terence received beautiful flowers, see for yourself!

Miss Wong's flowers (front) and Terence's basket full of goodies (back)

Just when I thought I was going to spend Valentine's day with no surprises, one of my little girls arrived with a little gift for me! So sweet!

My heart shaped chocolate! - Thank you Nicole (MT 330pm),

you brightened up my day!

Though today was lovely fun-packed day, I was sad to see two of my little girls have their last class :o( Nicole and Chelsea (FS2 1030am) , I hope you come to visit me soon!

Us girls just love to pose for the camera!

My MusikBox on Facebook!

Sometimes I wonder how ANYONE lived without the internet! It's such a great way to stay in touch. I use it to talk to my parents and friends back in England, and my nephews in Singapore and Shanghai.

One thing I check on a daily basis without fail is Facebook - admit it, you do too! ;o) So many people use Facebook nowadays that My Musikbox is even on it now! We're using it to share our photo gallery and news.

You can share with us too if you also use Facebook. Look us up, you're bound to find us and maybe one or two other members you already know!

See you soon!
